The University of Utah is gearing up for its inaugural Big 12 season with a non-conference matchup against Southern Utah University. On Thursday, Aug. 29, the campus will be buzzing with energy as the Utah Utes host the Southern Utah Thunderbirds for their home opener. To ensure a smooth and enjoyable experience for everyone involved, the university is making preparations and providing important information regarding potential impacts and necessary adjustments.
To ease congestion and minimize travel difficulties on game day, the university suggests the following transportation alternatives:
- Public transportation—Taking advantage of public transportation, particularly TRAX, is highly recommended. TRAX offers a reliable mode of transportation that is less likely to be affected by heavy game-day traffic. Those interested can find Park and Ride locations here. Remember that your UCard includes a TRAX pass.
- Additional parking—If driving to campus is unavoidable, additional parking options will be available. Staff, faculty and students can park at Stillwell Field between 6 a.m. and 8 p.m. Parking will also be available in the Shoreline parking garage, Merrill Engineering building and any northern campus parking lots.
On Thursday, Aug. 29, at 1 p.m., all lower and main campus parking lots will be opened for “Crimson” parking.
With more than 8,000 cars typically parked on campus during a regular fall schedule on Thursday afternoons, we anticipate the parking lot closures will have some impact on students, faculty and staff.
Faculty have the flexibility to consider alternative instruction models if their classes will be significantly impacted. More information for faculty can be found here.
Staff also can work with their supervisors to consider alternative work arrangements on game day.
Let’s come together as a community and kick off the football season with enthusiasm and good planning.
