UTA: A convenient way to get around campus and the community

The University of Utah and the Utah Transit Authority (UTA) have a longstanding partnership aimed at reducing commuting costs and promoting sustainable travel to and from campus and throughout our community. UTA is an incredible partner to our campus, and we want to ensure all students, staff and faculty can take advantage of the program to optimize their commutes.

UTA benefits

Upon starting school or a career at the University of Utah, all students, staff, and faculty receive access to most UTA services. Once you receive your UCard, simply scan it and you ride for free! Just hop on and enjoy fare-free travel as long as you are a student, staff, or faculty member.

The following services (and more!) are available to students, staff and faculty:

  • Buses: Over 60 UTA bus stops are available on campus with numerous routes serving the broader Salt Lake community.
  • TRAX: The light rail system has four stops on campus via the Red Line – Stadium Station, South Campus Station, Fort Douglas Station, and Medical Center Station. The Red Line and other lines can get you all over the valley, from the airport to Downtown Salt Lake to Daybreak to Draper. Check UTA’s website to see all the routes available.
  • FrontRunner: Although FrontRunner doesn’t go directly to campus, it is a great way to get to Salt Lake City from Davis and Utah counties.
  • Carpool: Interested students, staff, and faculty can save time and money by commuting together. Set up your account to find one-time or ongoing connections for carpools, transit buddies, or bike partners.

For information about additional services offered to our campus community by UTA, please read our UTA webpage.

Heads up: Paratransit, Ski and Park City Services are not available to all, but students, staff, and faculty with a valid Summit County zip code may obtain a Park City Connect pass.

How to use your UTA benefits

To use your UTA benefits, simply locate your desired mode of transportation and tap on with your UCard as you enter. Your UCard must be tapped on and off each time you ride a UTA bus or TRAX; card readers are located inside buses and at various locations on TRAX station platforms.

UCards are not transferable and may only be used by the owner of the card. UTA has the authority to confiscate passes and ID cards from those using them fraudulently.

UTA resources

Aside from being a great partner of the University of Utah, UTA takes pride in the community and its residents by providing helpful resources to keep your commute moving. Download the Transit app for bus routes, schedules, and more. You can also sign up for UTA Service Alerts, which will provide you with the latest information about UTA services, detours, closures, delays, and more.
