[2:30 p.m. Friday, May 25, 2018] No holiday construction work

UDOT will not be performing any road construction work this holiday weekend from 3 p.m. on Friday, May 25, through 5 a.m. Tuesday, May 29.
Surfaces between lanes on Mario Capecchi may be uneven as asphalt removal takes place. Merge lanes early to improve safety and please pay attention to signage if in the area.

[8 a.m. Thursday, May 18, 2018] North Campus Dr morning commute

North Campus Drive: North Campus Drive morning traffic may be impacted by construction equipment. Crews working this morning to get the equipment moved.

[3:30 p.m. Friday, May 18, 2018] Weekend lane closures on Mario Capecchi

Mario Capecchi Drive: The outside southbound lane and shoulder will be closed as crews update pedestrian ramps between North Campus Drive and Foothill Drive this weekend. At minimum, one lane in each direction on Capecchi will remain open.

All crossings remain fully accessible. In some locations temporary ramps may be added to allow newly-poured concrete to cure around the existing ramps. Please pay attention to and follow signage if you will be in the area.

[5 p.m. Wednesday, May 16, 2018] Nightly lane closures, rotomilling on Mario Capecchi

The work on Mario Capecchi Drive has begun. Single lane closures are scheduled to occur nightly. It is recommended that motorists leave early and plan for extra time — 15-minute delays can be expected.

Tonight, Wednesday, May 16, crews will be working on: lowering utilities, installing new traffic detection devises for signals and ADA improvements to sidewalks.

Nighttime rotomilling on Mario Capecchi will begin Thursday, May 17.

Roads will be continue to be open during the morning and afternoon commutes.

During this project, all lanes on Mario Capecchi Drive are scheduled to remain open during daytime hours and during the morning and afternoon commutes. One lane will remain open in each direction during night work, and 24/7 on the weekends.

[11 a.m. Tuesday, May 15, 2018] Pedestrian ramp removal and replacement beginning on Mario Capecchi Dr tomorrow

Overnight, UDOT filled in the portion of North Campus Drive that had previously been chipped out. The road is back to full capacity for the time being with 2 lanes eastbound (toward the main medical campus) and 2 lanes westbound (away from the main medical campus). Construction on this road is postponed while UDOT collaborates with the university to revise the construction and traffic plan.

UDOT crews will begin removing and replacing pedestrian ramps along Mario Capecchi Dr on the northbound side at night beginning Wednesday, May 16.
  • Anticipate some additional nighttime noise from concrete removal, additional trucks and construction equipment.
  • Locations are being confirmed. If you need access assistance, please contact the project team.
Asphalt removal and replacement is planned to begin the night of May 20.

No work is planned for the nights of Saturday, May 26 through Monday, May 28, in recognition of the Memorial Day holiday.

[12 p.m. Monday, May 14, 2018] Mario Capecchi construction to begin, North Campus Dr work postponed

In response to major delays on North Campus Drive last week, the Utah Department of Transportation (UDOT) is postponing work on the road while UDOT collaborates with the university to revise the construction and traffic plan. In the meantime, UDOT is shifting its resources to begin asphalt removal and replacement on Mario Capecchi Drive between North Campus Drive and Foothill Drive.

The work on Mario Capecchi Drive is planned to begin tomorrow, Tuesday, May 15. Single lane closures are scheduled to occur nightly. It is recommended that motorists leave early and plan for extra time — 15-minute delays can be expected.

North Campus Drive Project background:

UDOT has been working closely with the University of Utah in planning for work to be done on North Campus Drive. Following the plan’s implementation last week, it was determined that changes were necessary to ensure each organization’s commitment to:

  • Maintaining access to all hospitals and clinics for emergency crews, patients, and staff.
  • Providing a safe work zone width for construction crews.
  • Reducing the timeframe of the project to ensure the lowest possible traffic impact.

More information about plans for North Campus Drive will be provided as confirmed.

Updates from UDOT are available by calling 1-888-556-0232 or emailing campusdrive@utah.gov. Those updates will also be posted on Twitter @uofutraffic and online on @theU. Twitter users can receive text message updates on the project by texting "Follow @uofutraffic" to 40404.

[12:30 p.m. Friday, May 11, 2018] North Campus Dr currently open

The two eastbound lanes on North Campus Drive (toward the hospital) are currently open. One westbound lane (away from the hospital) is also open and operational. Further restrictions in this area can be expected as UDOT and the university work to find a solution to the traffic congestion issues experienced earlier this week. We will continue to provide updates as information becomes available.

Updates from UDOT are also available by calling 1-888-556-0232 or emailing campusdrive@utah.gov. Those updates will also be posted on Twitter @uofutraffic and online on @theU. Twitter users can receive text message updates on the project by texting "Follow @uofutraffic" to 40404.

Additionally, UDOT and the university have:

  • Enhanced directional signage along Central Campus Drive and Wasatch Drive
  • Extended green signals on Mario Capecchi to move traffic through faster
  • Added officers and flaggers during peak times around Mario Capecchi and North Campus to augment traffic lights
  • Opened East Medical Drive for southbound traffic after 2:30 p.m. The road is currently closed for utility work for the rehabilitation hospital
  • Changed two northbound lanes on Mario Capecchi Drive to right turn lanes to facilitate traffic to the hospital
  • Adjusted westbound lanes from North Medical to left turn lanes on Mario Capecchi Drive

Commuters and visitors should expect delays for the duration of this project, which is expected at the end of June. Drivers are encouraged to slow down, follow the signage posted, and be safe. Your patience throughout this project and other summer construction is appreciated.
