Historic football season opener at University of Utah

Editors note: this post has been updated with an additional parking map to provide clarity.

The University of Utah is gearing up for an exciting start to its 2023 football season with a historic home opener against the Florida Gators. As the campus prepares for this highly anticipated event, it's essential for everyone to be aware of potential impacts and make necessary adjustments. In this FAQ, we'll provide you with important information to ensure a smooth and enjoyable experience on game day.

When is the football season opener at the University of Utah?

The football season opener will take place on Thursday, August 31, at Rice-Eccles Stadium and will impact parking lots across campus starting Wednesday, August 30.

How can I avoid travel difficulties and congestion on game day?

To avoid traffic congestion, we highly recommend utilizing public transportation, especially TRAX and UTA buses. Both options provide reliable modes of transportation that are less likely to be affected by heavy game-day traffic. Find Park and Ride locations for convenient access to TRAX, here. Remember, your U card includes a TRAX pass.

Are there additional parking options available on game day?

If driving to campus is necessary, additional parking options will be available. Staff, faculty, and students can park at Stilwell Field between 6 a.m. and 8 p.m.

Will there be adjustments to campus schedules?

Yes. Adjustments are encouraged where possible. With more than 8,000 cars typically parked on campus during a regular fall schedule on Thursday afternoons, faculty are encouraged to make adjustments to class schedules and explore alternative instructional models  on this day. Please refer to this letter emailed from Provost Mitzi Montoya to deans and department chairs earlier this summer for reference.

Can staff members work remotely on game day?

Staff members who can work remotely are encouraged to do so, allowing more daytime parking space availability for students, staff, and faculty who must come to campus. Staff should discuss this option and obtain approval from their supervisors.

The University of Utah is excited to kick off the football season with the historic home opener against the Florida Gators. By following the transportation suggestions, exploring alternative instructional models, and considering remote work options, we can ensure a smooth and enjoyable experience for everyone.

Let's come together as a community and cheer on the Utes!
