Black History Month: Honoring Black labor, culture and community

Black History Month at the University of Utah is both a celebration and a declaration of resilience, innovation and the undeniable impact of Black communities, past and present. This year, the U will be acknowledging the theme: “African Americans and Labor,” which honors the generations of Black workers, builders and leaders who have shaped industries, movements and culture—often without recognition or reward.

“Labor is not just about work—it’s about creation,” said LeiLoni Allan-McLaughlin, director of the Center for Community and Cultural Engagement (CCE). “Black culture is a product of labor. The labor of storytelling, of music and art, of intellectual thought and radical vision. Jazz, hip-hop, literature, activism—these are the results of brilliance, shaping not just our history, but our present and future.”

“At the U, students, faculty and staff carry on this tradition of labor—advocating, organizing and striving for excellence, often in spaces that weren’t built for us,” she said. “That’s why this month isn’t just about remembering—it’s about recognizing who we are, what we’ve done and what we will continue to do.”

She added that Black History Month is an opportunity to connect, and amplify Black voices and “to ensure that our presence is not just acknowledged, but valued.”

This year, the CCE has compiled a schedule of events designed to honor Black labor, celebrate Black culture, as well as create spaces of joy, reflection and empowerment. All U students, faculty and staff, as well as members of the off-campus community, are invited to join in celebrating Black History Month 2025.
