"The Obama Portraits" by Taina Caragol

Artist Amy Sherald painted Michelle Obama’s portrait and I got to see it as part of an exhibition of Sherald’s work currently on display at the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art. Sherald’s portraits are amazing and beautiful. This book sheds light on not only Sherald’s work but also the general impact works of art and fuller representation have on American culture.

I love memoirs about reading! And this one doesn’t disappoint. Glory Edim is the founder of Well-Read Black Girl who started a revolution on social media in getting people to read great books and come to a closer understanding of the power of stories and storytelling.

"I Just Keep Talking" by Nell Irvin Painter

This new book of collected essays and art provides an excellent introduction to Painter’s works. It’s organized by broad categories (such as White history) and offers quick, short, impactful thoughts on current events steeped in Black history in America.

"Smoke Kings" by Jamal Mayfield

A reference to The Song of the Smoke poem by W.E.B. DuBois, this social justice crime novel kept me in suspense. I couldn’t put it down and read it in a couple of days during the winter break. I wanted a slightly different ending, but the writing, history, and storytelling made it worth it.
