Your voice, your vote: Why the ASUU election matters

From funding events and student organizations to advocating for campus-wide improvements, the Associated Students of the University of Utah (ASUU) makes decisions that impact every student at the University of Utah. Now, it’s your turn to decide who will lead. The ASUU election is happening now, and the deadline to vote is Friday, Feb. 28, at 11:59 a.m.

As the U’s official student government, ASUU plays a vital role in campus life. Each year, student leaders manage more than a million dollars in student fees, funding campus events, student organizations, and essential resources. They also advocate for students by working closely with university administration on key issues such as tuition rates, mental health resources, and campus improvements. Additionally, ASUU organizes major events—from concerts to career fairs—all designed to enhance the student experience.

“The ASUU election is more than just a student government race—it’s a chance for students to have a say in their own college experience,” said Sierra Canela, director for Student Governance and Leadership. “We want every student to vote and make their voice count so that ASUU leadership truly reflects the needs and priorities of our student body.”

Now that the primary tickets have been announced, students can vote for the executive ticket, each consisting of a President, Vice President of University Relations, and Vice President of Student Relations. The president serves as the primary student representative, collaborates with university leadership, and oversees ASUU operations. The Vice President of University Relations focuses on academic and policy initiatives, while the Vice President of Student Relations works with student organizations to ensure their needs are met through programming and services.

Students will also vote for their senate representative, who will serve as the voice of their college within ASUU. Elected senators act as liaisons between students and ASUU, advocating for policies and initiatives that support their academic communities. Additionally, students can elect Assembly representatives, who represent various academic and student groups. These representatives play a key role in overseeing funding decisions, supporting student organizations, and managing legislative matters within ASUU. To encourage voter participation and help students connect with the candidates, ASUU is hosting the Ready to Rumble Rally on Feb. 25 from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. in the Union Ballroom Corridor and Democracy Dawgs on Feb. 27 from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. on the Union Walkway. The newly elected officials will be announced at the Announcement Party on Feb. 28 from 3 to 5 p.m. outside on the Union Patio.
