TWO MINUTES TO WIN ITHinckely Institute speech competition

In just two minutes you could win $5,000.

The Hinckley Institute of Politics and ASUU are sponsoring HIP Talks, a university-wide speech contest in which students can talk about anything they want, as long as they keep it within the two-minute time frame. Any U student can participate for a chance to win the $5,000 grand prize or one of the $1,000 prizes in five categories: humorous, compelling, informative, original and audience favorite.

Molly Wheeler, administrative coordinator for the Hinckley Institute, said the program wants to help students improve their public speaking skills, which she said is one of the best ways to foster community engagement in politics.

MARRIOTT LIBRARY SEES THE SUN WITH NEW SOLAR PROJECT

SolarThe Marriott Library unveiled its rooftop solar panels this past Monday.

The project, monitored by the “solar dashboard,” has an online widget that displays how much energy the panels generate and the equivalent of that in fossil fuels.

Tom Melburn, who graduated from the U in business in May 2014, began the solar project in 2011. With funding from the Sustainable Campus Initiative Fund, ASUU and Rocky Mountain Power’s Blue Sky Program, Melburn took his interest in curbing climate change and started a few projects — one of which was the solar dashboard.

He hopes the dashboard shows “what students can do to help make their campus better … how to make a lasting impact.”

Head coach Kyle Whittingham said the team got off to a good start and they are paying attention to all the details right now.

“It’s always a fundamentally, technique time of the year,” Whittingham said.
