The University of Utah Department of Public Safety, Commuter Services and Sustainability Office are committed to ensuring the safety of people who walk and people riding wheeled devices such as bicycles, skateboards and scooters while traveling on campus. As our campus population grows, it is important that we all yield to people walking when traveling between classes, to work or to the residence halls. Following a culture of yield is imperative to your personal safety, whether you are driving a personal or university vehicle or cart, riding a wheeled device or hosting an event on campus–it’s everyone’s responsibility to keep our campus safe.
To ensure the safety of all people traveling on campus paths, please follow these guidelines:
- You are responsible for following University Policy 3-232, Operating Regulations for Bicycles, Skateboard, Rollerskates and Scooters while traveling on university property.
- Every person riding any wheeled device must ALWAYS yield the right of way to pedestrians.
- The campus speed limit for wheeled devices on campus paths is 10 mph.
- The campus speed limit for motorized vehicles (cart, truck) on campus paths is 5 mph.
- Always wear a helmet, and make sure you can HEAR your surroundings (ditch those headphones!).
- No wheeled devices are allowed to be parked or ridden within buildings or parking garages (unless accessing a secure parking area).
- SPIN is the university’s exclusive shared mobility provider–ride shared e-scooters safely and according to the above guidelines.
Moving your body to get to your destination can have multiple benefits! You can improve your health and wellness, save money on vehicle expenses, reduce carbon emissions and help clear our air. For more information on how to register your wheeled device and what devices are allowed on campus, see this recent article.
Through the month of October, you’ll find student and staff representatives on our campus paths encouraging you to slow ‘U’r roll, and yield to people walking!
