Campus police remind everyone to always be aware of their surroundings and to immediately report suspicious activities on campus.
Below is more information about the timing of the alert.
- Security at the Marriott Library contacted University Police Wednesday around 11 a.m. about a suspicious individual. An officer responded and escorted the man (Kidus Yohannes) from the building. The officer ran a background check, but did not find any outstanding warrants on Yohannes.
- At 12:40 p.m., Salt Lake City Police tweeted an image of Yohannes and listed him as a “person of interest” in a homicide. Salt Lake Police subsequently also sent out a press release that afternoon.
- That evening, the university police officer saw the media coverage indicating that SLCPD was actively looking for Yohannes as a person of interest in a homicide. He recognized Yohannes and called campus police dispatch to report his earlier interaction with him.
- Out of an abundance of caution, a decision was made to share Salt Lake City Police’s information about Yohannes via a campus-wide alert since he had been seen at the U.
