Back in March 2025, the first formal announcement of the newly formed NLSO, or National Labs & Security Office, was made here at the University of Utah. Learn more in the new video below.
Funded by the Department of Energy (DOE), the National Laboratories are key drivers of research and innovation in science and technology. The National Labs address large-scale, complex research and development challenges with a multidisciplinary approach that places an emphasis on translating basic science to innovation.
There are 17 National Laboratories spread across the United States—a reminder that the NLSO is here to work with labs and agencies for:
- Developing contracts, MOUs and agreements
- Establishing and maintaining research connections
- Supporting researcher and student placement
- Aligning the university with national strategies
Currently, the University of Utah has agreements with the Idaho National Labs (INL) and Sandia. In addition to working with National Labs, the NLSO is the point of contact for the university partnership with Oak Ridge Associated Universities (ORAU), providing unique research and educational opportunities for our students and faculty.
