Be true to your school: Support scholarships

U launches statewide license plates campaign to benefit Utah students.

The University of Utah Office of Alumni Relations (U Alumni) recently launched a statewide collegiate license plates campaign to support Utah students by providing scholarship funds throughout the state.

U Alumni’s current license plates program awards scholarships to deserving U students each year. In the 2019–20 academic year alone, U Alumni awarded more than $800,000 in scholarships—which more than 200 U students rely on to pursue their academic goals.

“The statewide collegiate plate campaign is an effort to support our new and improved focus on license plates driving scholarships,” said Linda Dunn B.S. ’81 MEd ’95, interim chief alumni relations officer. “It was the finale of a yearlong effort to make our license plate ads more visible and focus on scholarship support.”

In an effort to broaden the impact of license plate-funded scholarships throughout Utah, the U pitched the idea to colleagues across the state to join forces on a statewide campaign that promotes all colleges in Utah, not just one.

Eight colleges are now participating in the campaign—the University of Utah, Brigham Young University, Southern Utah University, Dixie State University, Utah State University, Weber State University, Westminster College and Utah Valley University.

The campaign received the support of the Utah Auto Dealers Association, which agreed to promote the distribution of 1,000 license plate replicas with logos from each college to dealerships throughout the state. The aim is to encourage car buyers to support their schools by boosting scholarship funding to university students in Utah. All funds exchanged go through the Utah Division of Motor Vehicles and are then passed to individual institutions to directly support their scholarship programs.

“We are collaborating to support each other in this great cause,” said Dunn. “This shared campaign is a great way to show pride in your favorite school— we’re typically competing, but now we’re coming together to raise scholarship funds for all students.”

U Alumni also recently covered the first-year cost and fees for a U collegiate license plate to new grads as part of a commencement gift distributed in May. The package included a U Alumni license plate frame and car decal.
