October is SafeU Month at the University of Utah, and there will be dozens of opportunities to engage in safety awareness, education and training opportunities on campus. See what’s happening throughout the month here.
Week One (Sept. 30-Oct. 6) launches SafeU Month with a general focus on resources, support, tools, trainings and other safety information.
“Safety is a culture” means we—as a campus community—think, act and engage with everyone’s safety in mind. Make a Pact to Act this month by reading (see box), engaging and participating in a safety activity.
Here is our list of 10s, which spotlight some—but not all—safety actions, resources and trainings on campus:
10 campus safety/support resources
- SafeU.utah.edu is a comprehensive website with safety-related information
- The Office of Equal Opportunity, Affirmative Action and Title IX deals with sexual misconduct and discrimination
- The Office for Inclusive Excellence addresses incidents of bias and intolerance
- The Center for Student Wellness provides health education and victim-survivor advocacy
- Courtesy escorts are available for any reason to accompany campus community members
- University Counseling Center, Women’s Resource Center and University Neuropsychiatric Institute provide mental health and crisis counseling
- Occupational and Environmental Health and Safety provides resources, training and reporting options, particularly on lab safety
- Emergency Management Services provides resources and training on disaster and emergency preparedness
- Find sexual assault, interpersonal violence and domestic violence resources, both on and off campus
- The LGBT Resource Center offers resources, support, programs and counseling
10 trainings on campus
- Bystander intervention training empowers people to intervene in problematic situations to deescalate harm
- Rape Aggression Defense is a four-week, women-only course focused on awareness, prevention, risk reduction, risk avoidance and basic hands-on defense training
- Presentations for international students are available through the Office for Global Engagement
- Suicide prevention and awareness education is available from the University Counseling Center
- Managing difficult student behavior is a guidebook prepared by the University Counseling Center
- Emergency Management Services provides preparedness trainings upon request
- A workshop on understanding and challenging rape culture is offered by the Center for Student Wellness upon request
- Learn how to help and support your peers through the Wellness Advocate Training
- Healthy relationships workshops are offered by the University Counseling Center and Center for Student Wellness
- Mindfulness workshops from the University Counseling Center are designed to help manage stress

10 actions on safety
- Evening classes have been consolidated in five neighborhoods
- Coordinated shuttle, van and courtesy escort services with neighborhoods
- SafeRide, an on-demand evening campus van service, launched this fall
- Students with U parking passes may now park in "A" lots after 3 p.m.
- Added more lights—now 3,204—and security cameras
- Revised HRE’s Overnight Guest Policy
- Created Resilience U working group
- Established seed grant program for research on violence against women
- Partnered with the One Love Foundation to provide healthy relationship workshops
- Added new online training modules for students on mental health (October) and diversity, equity & inclusion awareness and prescription drug abuse prevention (spring)
10 trainings that are new, ongoing or specifically required
- Mandatory training for incoming students on sexual assault prevention and bystander intervention.
- Firearms on campus
- Housing & Residential Education (HRE) and University Police (UUPD) received Behavioral Intervention Team basic training
- Key HRE and Office of the Dean of Students staff completed NABITA and SIVRA threat assessment training
- HRE & UUPD received OEO/AA/Title IX training on required reporting processes
- HRE staff received additional training on housing policies, specifically about guest visitors
- UUPD staff received enhanced training on law enforcement databases
- UUPD officers and appropriate staff completed Lethality Assessment Program training
- All faculty and staff hires are assigned information security courses
- Healthy relationship training by One Love Foundation
