On today’s events

What we are witnessing is not representative of the fundamental ideals that have shaped our nation and made us a model of governance throughout the world.

To our university community,

The turmoil and violence taking place in Washington, D.C., today is tragic and deeply disturbing. I know that we are all concerned for the health and well-being of our fellow citizens.

The peaceful transfer of power is a hallmark of our democracy. What we are witnessing is not representative of the fundamental ideals that have shaped our nation and made us a model of governance throughout the world. As an institution of higher education, we encourage vigorous debate and difference of opinion offered with respect; we support the rule of law; we believe in upholding our Constitution. We join those who condemn the unlawful acts that attempted to disrupt our democratic processes today.

During this troubling time, please take care of your mental and emotional health and reach out to friends and family who might be in need of support. If you are in need of help the 24/7 crisis line is available at 800-273-8255 and SafeU resources are available here.
