Salt Lake City’s 100 South redevelopment project begins May 5

For many on campus, early May signals the successful completion of another or a final semester, leading into summer break. For those who remain on campus during those months, they’ll be contending with some major commuting challenges as road construction gets underway.

Beginning May 5, Salt Lake City crews will start a highly anticipated road reconstruction project on 100 South, with work scheduled to be completed before the fall semester begins on Aug. 17.

The project will redevelop the roadway and sidewalks between University Street and North Campus Drive. Crews will replace the aging pavement and provide safer multi-modal access for pedestrians and bicyclists by widening the southern sidewalk and adding a new sidewalk where none currently exists. On-street parking will be permanently removed to make room for the new features.

Communication, including road signage reminding commuters and neighbors that construction will begin after graduation, will begin appearing on April 29.

With 100 South serving as a vital access route to the medical campus, including University Hospital, Primary Children’s Hospital and Huntsman Cancer Institute, among others, drivers not seeking medical care are strongly encouraged to take an alternate route (if one is available).

Suggested detours for westbound traffic from the university and medical campuses include Mario Capecchi Drive or Wasatch Drive.

Central Campus Drive will be accessible in both directions from North Campus Drive as well as from Wasatch Drive to Exploration Way. Access from 100 South to Lot 38/Northwest Garage will be maintained via 1455 East.

Additionally, 100 South will be limited to eastbound (uphill) traffic only to maintain critical access to these facilities. No westbound access will be available during the three-month construction period.

Vehicle access to 1455 East, North Campus Drive and other connecting routes to 100 South will remain open for access to U buildings.

All side streets on the north side of 100 South of the project area will be closed. Federal Way will also only have access to northbound (uphill) North Campus Drive. Nearby neighbors should use local streets to access South Temple, University Street or Virginia Street.
