Pioneer Theatre Company (PTC), the professional theatre company in residence on the University of Utah campus, presents the Utah premiere of “Natasha, Pierre & The Great Comet of 1812” from May 10-25, 2024.
Nominated for 12 Tony Awards, “Natasha, Pierre & The Great Comet of 1812” is an electropop opera written by Dave Malloy and adapted from a scandalous slice of Leo Tolstoy’s “War and Peace.” Young and impulsive, Natasha Rostova arrives in Moscow to await the return of her fiancé from the front lines. When she falls under the spell of the roguish Anatole, it is up to Pierre, a family friend, to pick up the pieces of her shattered reputation. This award-winning musical, with its daring score and bold storytelling—including eight onstage actors/musicians (part of an overall cast of 20)—is one of the most requested titles from PTC audiences in recent memory and will be presented in an immersive format never before seen at PTC!
“Ever since I experienced ‘The Great Comet’ on Broadway 10 years ago, I’ve wanted to bring it to PTC,” said Karen Azenberg, PTC artistic director and the show’s director/choreographer. “I couldn’t be more thrilled that this glittering, sumptuous spectacle is finally having its Utah premiere. The stars have truly aligned with the exceptional creative team and cast we’ve been able to assemble. We can’t wait for audiences to experience ‘Natasha, Pierre & The Great Comet of 1812.’ We’ve even reconfigured some of the seating to make this an immersive experience; PTC has never really produced anything quite like it.”
