Rice-Eccles Stadium will be hosting two annual events in partnership with the Utah Sports Commission that may impact campus and surrounding communities. Saturday, May 6, will be the Monster Jam and Saturday, May 13, will be the Monster Energy AMA Supercross finals.
This year the Monster Jam—with a start time of 7 p.m.—will not conflict with the university’s Commencement and college convocations exercises scheduled for May 4-5, learn more about those events here.
Here's everything you need to know.
Transportation impacts
Beginning April 29 at 6 a.m. to May 7 at 6 a.m., the far right (north) westbound lane on 500 South will be closed from Guardsman Way to 1300 East. The north and south sidewalk along 500 South will remain open to pedestrians and cyclists, see map below.
After the event ends, all lanes on 500 South will be closed for one hour as attendees exit campus.
If you are interested in attending the Monster Jam event, you may purchase tickets here. If you have any questions or comments regarding the impacts discussed in this letter, please contact Rice-Eccles Stadium at (801) 581-5445.
The University of Utah will celebrate its Class of 2023 graduates at the University Commencement ceremony on Thursday, May 4 at 6 p.m. MDT at the Jon M. Huntsman Center. This in-person gathering honors graduating students from our colleges and schools across campus together during this university-wide event. College convocation ceremonies have been scheduled across campus throughout each day, May 4-5, see the full schedule here. An increase in vehicle traffic and public transportation use to and from campus should be expected both days.
Watch the Commencement ceremony online at utah.edu/live.
Starting May 10 at 5 to May 13 at 5 a.m.
- All eastbound lanes on 500 South (from Guardsman Way to 1300 East) will be closed.
- During this time, two westbound lanes will remain open.
- The north and south sidewalks along 500 South will remain open for pedestrians and cyclists.
- Eastbound traffic will be detoured either south to 800 South or north to South Campus Drive. We are recommending those using 400 South to access campus daily use alternative routes during this time. Using 900 East to 800 South should avoid traffic congestion expected at 500 South and 1300 East.
May 13 at 5 a.m. to May 14 at 12 p.m. (RACE DAY)
- All east and westbound lanes on 500 South (from Guardsman Way to 1300 East) will be closed.
- Guardsman Way (from 500 South to roughly 592 Guardsman Way) will be closed.
- All sidewalks on 500 South will be closed to pedestrians and cyclists.
May 14 at 12 p.m. to May 17 at 12 a.m.
- The far right (north) westbound lane on 500 South will be closed from Guardsman Way to 1300 East.
Traffic signage and equipment will be in place to direct vehicle traffic during the closure periods. Road closures will not impact emergency vehicle routes.
The permits required for these road closures were issued by the Salt Lake City Department of Public Services and the Utah Department of Transportation. For more information about the permits obtained, contact the SLC Special Events Permits at (801)535-6105 and the UDOT Special Events Permits at (801) 975-4900.
If you are interested in attending the Monster Jam event, you may purchase tickets here. If you have any questions or comments regarding the impacts discussed in this letter, please contact Rice-Eccles Stadium at (801) 581-5445.
On race day, May 3, Guardsman Way will be closed to through traffic all forms of transportation. Cyclists and pedestrians can avoid the impacted area by utilized the following path through the V.A. Hospital Campus and Sunnyside Park. For those utilizing the UTA bus system, plan your trip here.
Commuters wishing to exit or enter campus have the following options.
- Option 1: South Campus Drive eastbound or westbound to either 1300 East or Mario Capecchi.
- Option 2: Utilize Mario Capecchi Drive and Foothill Drive to bypass the impacted area.
- Option 3: Utilize North Campus Drive to bypass the area completely.
There will be an increased police presence during the event to direct traffic at all major thoroughfares into the University of Utah campus. In addition, police will be in and around the stadium during the event, then back out into the surrounding areas to direct traffic as the event ends. They will be responsible for all traffic and the public safety of the guests, staff and neighbors before, during and after the event.
On event day, residents in surrounding communities can expect loud noises associated with sporting events, such as crowds cheering, announcer speaking, occasional music playing, fireworks and more. Residents may also notice bright illuminations coming from the stadium’s lighting fixtures and scoreboard. However, the increased sound level and bright lights will subside when the event ends.
The Jon M. Huntsman Center will host graduation ceremonies for the Canyons, Granite and Salt Lake City school districts, respectively. An increase of vehicle traffic and those utilizing public transportation traveling to and from campus throughout both days should be expected.
- May 25 | Canyons School District
- June 2| Granite School District
- June 9 | Salt Lake School District
