This summer will be one of big changes for one of the University of Utah’s most traveled thoroughfares.
Salt Lake City will begin a major road reconstruction project meant to improve mobility and accessibility on 100 South between University Street and North Campus Drive.
Among the planned improvements are replacing aging pavement, expanding the south-side sidewalk to enhance pedestrian and bicycle access, and adding new sidewalks for increased mobility. To improve traffic flow, existing on-street parking on 100 South will be removed.
Planners say the completed project will offer greater safety and multi-modal access for all users, along with managing the deteriorating roadway conditions on the heavily-used street.

Construction is expected to start immediately following graduation ceremonies in May, with completion scheduled for mid-August prior to the beginning of fall semester.
First South is one of the main routes to the university as well as the medical campus, including University Hospital, the Huntsman Cancer Institute and Primary Children’s Hospital. In an effort to maintain efficient access to those healthcare clinics and hospitals, 100 South is expected to be limited to eastbound (uphill) traffic only, with no westbound access during the construction period. All non-medical traffic is advised to use alternate routes to avoid impeding medical care access.
Alternative detour routes for westbound traffic from the university and medical campuses will include Mario Capecchi Drive or Wasatch Drive. Nearby residents are advised to use local streets to access South Temple, University Street or Virginia Street for alternate accessibility.

- Signage on the multi-use path stating that bicycles must yield to pedestrians.
- Shared bicycle-vehicle lane markings for the outside vehicle lane in the downhill direction on the roadway to warn motorists about the potential presence of cyclists in the road.
- New radar technology at the Wolcott Street-1455 East intersection, so bikes will be detected while riders wait to cross the intersection.
- A leading pedestrian interval at the Wolcott Street-1455 East intersection. When pedestrians push the pedestrian button, they will get a several-second head start to begin crossing the street before any cars get a green light. That lead time will aid in helping pedestrians get across the street before any turning vehicles can proceed, and also enhances pedestrian visibility in the crosswalk.
- New signage at Wolcott Street and 1455 East which illuminates with flashing lights to warn turning vehicles there are pedestrians using the crosswalk. The signs will activate when the pedestrian signal is requested.
- Installation of a “No Right Turn” sign for northbound traffic going onto 100 South from University Street. The new sign is activated when the pedestrian signal is requested.
