The Red Med Employee Health Clinic, located on the ground floor of the Union building, is an urgent care, work injury, immunization and occupational medicine clinic available to employees of the University of Utah as an extension of their medical benefits, at no cost. The Red Med Clinic is operated in partnership between the Human Resource Benefits Department, the School of Medicine and the College of Nursing. These organizations come together to provider employees free medical care through evaluation of acute illnesses, virtual visits, basic procedural intervention and prescription services, provided by a certified nurse practitioner, a registered nurse and other medical staff.
The Red Med Clinic provides non-emergent services for basic health care needs and acute illnesses. They offer same day services allowing for staff to be evaluated, treated and return to work quickly without requiring use of paid time off or missing work. Many visits can be completed while on break or during an employee’s lunch time. Red Med Clinic works with several pharmacies located on or near campus to allow for easy access to medications or prescriptions if needed. With the Red Med Clinic’s central location in the Union building, employees can use the ride-share app or the university shuttles to transfer from their place of employment to the clinic and back with ease.
The Red Med Clinic offers several basic in-clinic laboratory services such as rapid influenza and strep throat screenings as well as urinalysis, pregnancy testing and blood sugar testing. The Red Med Clinic offers free immunization services including participation in the employee annual influenza immunization program, as well as age-appropriate vaccinations for shingles (Shingrix), pneumonia (Prevnar 13) and tetanus/pertussis/diphtheria (tDap). Other immunizations and services are available through cooperation with Environmental Health Services including hepatitis B and tuberculosis screening, animal handler and OSHA respiratory clearance evaluation if required for employment.
