5 great reads for African American History Month

The Marriott Library put together a list of five books to check out in celebration of African American History Month.

"The Warmth of Other Suns" by Isabel Wilkerson

Tells the history of the Great Migration from the perspective of three individuals who experienced it firsthand, the reasons they left the American South and what their lives were like in other parts of the U.S.

"The Nickel Boys" by Colson Whitehead

A tragic story about a young African American man who's life gets upended when he accepts a ride from a stranger on his way to fulfill his college dreams.

"A Hundred Thousand Kingdoms" by N.K. Jemisin

A great fantastical story of human-gods with dual souls and the discovery of this fact.

"A Different Drummer" by William Melvin Kelley

Compelling story of African Americans who leave a town to establish a new city and community, the decisions that led up to it and the reaction of white members in the town.

"The New Negro" by Jeffrey Stewart

An amazingly researched biography of philosopher Alain Locke.
