As a beacon of light, hope, and acceptance for our LGBTQ+ community on and around campus, the annual Pride Week at the U returns April 1-6.
This weeklong series of events provides a moment for our campus to come together and reflect on the unwavering passion, resilience and beauty that the LGBTQ+ community embodies every day of the year.
“When asked why we celebrate Pride Week, my answer is simple—community,” said Tomoya Averett, executive chair for Pride Week and program and outreach coordinator for the LGBT Resource Center. “We celebrate, we heal, we triumph and we continue to share our stories in the community. During Pride Week, we hope everyone has an opportunity to find, gather, and feel community.”
This year’s theme, “Here & Queer: The Pride Renaissance,” focuses on ushering in a new chapter and an opportunity to stand in solidarity with the LGBT community like never before. It emphasizes the enduring presence of the Queer community in the history of the University of Utah.
Pride Week kicks off with the annual GayLa at Mountain West Cider on Saturday, March 30, at 6:30 p.m. Embracing the theme “In Color,” attendees are encouraged to explore perspectives beyond “black and white” mindsets, with bright colors as the suggested attire. Notably, this event is free for the first time, with funds raised supporting the LGBT Resource Center. Click here to register and learn more about this year’s GayLa.
