UNIVERSITY STATEMENT CONDEMNING RACISM[bs_row class=”row”][bs_col class=”col-sm-4″][/bs_col][bs_col class=”col-sm-8″]Several flyers were reported in various locations around the University of Utah campus Friday, April 13, that said “Stop genocide in South Africa White Lives Matter.” These improperly posted flyers were removed. The University of Utah stands against racism in any form. In October, the university announced the creation of a Presidential Anti-Racism Task Force charged with developing and deploying institutional changes to address safety, inclusion and respect for all members of our campus community. The university is committed to offering resources and trainings designed to address implicit bias and support a culture of inclusion and safety.[/bs_col][/bs_row]

REMEMBERING ZEKE DUMKE[bs_row class=”row”][bs_col class=”col-sm-4″][/bs_col][bs_col class=”col-sm-8″]”Zeke will be deeply missed by our faculty, staff and students. Zeke and his beloved wife Kay shared a passionate commitment to the University of Utah and gave generously of their time, enthusiasm and financial resources to support dozens of university programs — including Red Butte Garden, our gymnastics team, University of Utah Health, and our campus art and cultural programs.

I will especially miss Zeke’s intellectual curiosity. Even toward the end of his life, he welcomed and wanted to hear new ideas from all areas of campus. He loved asking questions of everyone he met — faculty, staff and students alike. His enthusiasm and energy were unmatched. He and Kay were more than just philanthropists; they were partners in helping the university achieve its mission.

My condolences go out to his daughters Betsy, Claire, and Andrea, his son Zeke III, and their families. On behalf of the entire University of Utah community I want to thank the Dumke family for sharing Zeke with us. We will miss him.”

Chemist Luisa Whittaker-Brooks wins Cottrell Scholar Award[bs_row class=”row”][bs_col class=”col-sm-4″][/bs_col][bs_col class=”col-sm-8″]Luisa Whittaker-Brooks, assistant professor of chemistry, has been awarded a Cottrell Scholar Award from the Research Corporation for Science Advancement. She is one of 24 early career researchers to receive the three-year, $100,000 award, which will help her advance both her research and teaching efforts.

In her research efforts, Whittaker-Brooks will use part of the award to develop novel materials that can become transistors in an alternative electronics system called spintronics. Unlike conventional electronics, where the charge of electrons is used to store information in transistors, spintronics uses the spin (angular momentum) of electrons to carry digital information. Whittaker-Brooks is focusing on three different metal-carbon hybrid molecules, looking for materials with, in her words, “fundamentally tunable spin that operate with high reliability, low potential for overheating, low cost, and minimization of defects.”

In her teaching, Whittaker-Brooks intends to design an interdisciplinary general chemistry course that incorporates hands-on activities and evidence-based teaching methods “while fostering a culture of inclusivity,” she says, “across the rapidly diversifying demographics at the University of Utah.”

University transitioning to Google Custom Search Engine[bs_row class=”row”][bs_col class=”col-sm-4″][/bs_col][bs_col class=”col-sm-8″]The University of Utah is in the process of transitioning to Google Custom Search Engine (GCSE). Google Search Appliance (GSA), the university’s current institutional website search product, is being discontinued by Google. After a months-long search for a suitable alternative, the university selected GCSE, Google’s no-cost service, which is ad-free for non-profit institutions. Read this Node 4 article for more information.

Websites using GSA will remain fully functional. Sites with their own GSA search collection (i.e., searches that only look in a specific “collection” of sites) will be migrated to a GCSE collection, and continue to function as before. University Information Technology’s University Support Services (USS) team will migrate campus OmniUpdate (OU) websites to use a local GCSE search page, as has been done with it.utah.edu.

Even though search boxes will remain fully functional, campus web developers are encouraged to make changes to existing search code, and take advantage of the ability to host a local search results page. Instructions are available here.

Barb Iannucci, USS associate director of Content Management & Usability, will host a UIT Talks event on Tuesday, April 24, 2018, 1-1:30 p.m., to address any remaining questions.

If you would like further instructions and guidance, please email Iannucci at barb.iannucci@utah.edu.[/bs_col][/bs_row]
