Public transit adventures

Looking to explore Salt Lake County and beyond by train? Here are a few ideas to get you started:

All transit provided by the Utah Transit Authority, UTA, is free for University of Utah students, faculty and staff with their U cards.

Downtown Ogden

From the Ogden Frontrunner Station, it’s just a few minutes’ walk to the city’s Historic 25th Street. Originally built during the development of the Transcontinental Railroad, 25th Street was first home to bootlegging, brothels, opium dens, and gambling. Now it’s a destination filled with small businesses, local restaurants, and art galleries. A variety of events and festivals are held on 25th Street throughout the year, and on Saturdays from late May to early September, it’s home to the Ogden farmers market.

If you don’t mind a short walk, Frontrunner provides a low-stress way to get to Lindquist Field for an Ogden Raptors game or the Ogden Amphitheater for the city’s Twilight Festival. Just make sure to check when the last train of the day leaves.

Jordan River Parkway Trail

The TRAX Green Line runs between West Valley City and the Salt Lake City International Airport. In addition to providing convenient access to the Maverick Center and Valley Fair Mall, it also has two stops on the Jordan River Parkway Trail— the River Trail Station and the Fair Park Station. You can bring your bike along or enjoy the trail on foot. If you’d like to bike or walk from one stop to another, it’s about 4.5 miles following the trail.

Gardner Village

Located on the TRAX Red Line, Gardner Village is about 40 minutes away from the U by train. Here you’ll find a variety of shops and restaurants built around the historic Gardner Mill. Gardner Village hosts multiple seasonal events throughout the year, including its annual fall WitchFest

You can find a full list of events here, from car shows to art workshops to tea parties.

Draper Library, City Park, and trails

The Draper Library and Draper City Park are located at the south end of the TRAX Blue Line. Multiple trails run through Draper City Park, perfect for biking or walking.
