“I actually spent my middle and high school years studying in the U.S., so when it came time to choose a university, I found myself thinking a lot about where I really wanted to be. I wanted to continue studying in an American-style academic environment, but at the same time, I didn’t want to be too far away from my family in Korea.
That’s why the University of Utah Asia Campus felt like a really good balance for me. UAC follows the same curriculum as the Utah home campus and students receive the same diploma, so academically, it felt like I could continue the path I had already been on. At the same time, being able to stay closer to my family made the transition feel much more manageable. Compared to many universities in the U.S., the tuition is also relatively affordable and there are scholarship opportunities, which was another reason I seriously considered this school.
When I first arrived, I remember feeling a little nervous. Starting somewhere new always comes with uncertainty. But orientation helped with that more than I expected. One thing I noticed right away was how much they encouraged students to talk to the people around them. In almost every session, they would ask us to turn to someone next to us and start a conversation. At first, it felt a little awkward, but then I realized everyone else was in the exact same situation, and it quickly made the atmosphere feel more relaxed.
One thing I really appreciate about UAC so far is how rich and inclusive the community feels. There are students who grew up in Korea, students who studied abroad and students from completely different countries. Everyone’s English level and background are different, but instead of feeling intimidating, it actually makes the environment feel more understanding.
Being here already makes me feel like this campus is more than just a place to study. It’s also a place where I can meet people with very different experiences and perspectives, and learn a lot from them while I’m here.”
