The University of Utah is dedicated to protecting the First Amendment Rights of all campus community members. Free speech policies at the U are designed to be as narrow and unrestrictive as possible. The university only restricts speech content in very specific cases such as harassment, intimidating face-to-face speech that is likely to provoke violence (fighting words), and speech that incites violence or illegal activities against others or property.
The “Time-out Series” created by University Marketing and Communications provides an overview of free speech and expression policies at the U. These guidelines ensure everyone on campus can exercise their First Amendment Rights and create an environment where opposing ideas can co-exist.
