Virtual French film festival comes to the U

Learning Abroad
February 24, 2021

In collaboration with the Departments of Film & Media Arts and World Languages & Cultures, Learning Abroad in the Office for Global Engagement is excited to present the Tournées Film Festival to virtually screen a series of films this spring 2021. To fund the screenings, Learning Abroad received a grant from the French-American Cultural Exchange (FACE Foundation), in partnership with the Franco-American Cultural Fund, which aims to bring French cinema to American college and university campuses. To guide you in better understanding these films, faculty from Film & Media Arts and World Languages & Cultures, along with Learning Abroad’s associate director, will be holding film discussions.

Showcasing established and emerging talents, the Tournées Film Festival reflects the diversity and the richness of French cinema through various genres—fiction, documentary, animation and repertory films. The selected films present a wide variety of subjects, perspectives, locations and human experiences. Two films, “Joan of Arc” and “The State Against Mandela and the Others,” have already been screened, and the four films listed below will be screened in the next few weeks. The festival is free and open to the public.

“Soleil O” | March 1-7

Discussion on March 9 with Chris Lippard from the Department of Film & Media Arts.

“The Freshmen” | March 8-12

Discussion on March 16 with Katrina Brown from Learning Abroad.

“Varda by Agnes” | March 8-14

Discussion on March 11 with Vanessa Brutsche from the Department of World Languages & Cultures.

“Portrait of a Lady on Fire” | March 18-19

Tournées Film Festival is made possible with the support of the Cultural Services of the French Embassy in the U.S., the Centre National du Cinéma et de l’Image Animée (CNC), the French American Cultural Fund, Florence Gould Foundation and Highbrow Entertainment.
