Pioneer Theatre Company (the resident professional theatre on the University of Utah campus) celebrated the huge milestone of 60 years since its dedication and first production (Shakespeare’s “Hamlet”). Ever since, PTC has produced unparalleled, world-class theatre for Utah audiences. That tradition continues this fall with the exciting world premiere of a Broadway-bound musical comedy, “Shucked.”
Billed as a “farm-to-fable,” “Shucked” features a hilarious book by Tony Award-winner Robert Horn (“Tootsie”), music and lyrics by the Grammy Award-winning team of Brandy Clark and Shane McAnally and direction by three-time Tony Award-winner Jack O’Brien (“Hairspray”). The creative team includes Grammy, Emmy, Tony and Oscar winners. The cast includes some of the brightest talent from Broadway and television—including John Behlmann (“Tootsie”), Kevin Cahoon (“Monarch”), Andrew Durand (“War Horse”), Caroline Innerbichler (“Frozen”), Ashley D. Kelly (“Marvel’s Luke Cage”), Alex Newell (“Glee”), Taylor Trensch (“Dear Evan Hansen”) and an incredible ensemble of Broadway veterans. See the full cast/creative team here.
The production, which is billed as “Broadway-bound” will run at PTC from Oct. 28 through Nov. 12. The score features a mix of pop, rock, country, gospel and of course, classic-style Broadway show tunes. The musical comedy fable is about a small town in crisis and the one woman brave enough to leave the safety of home to save the town from ruin. “Shucked” uses laughter to celebrate community and family, finding courage to believe in yourself and that connecting with people can sometimes solve your biggest problems.
