UConnect secure login changes, UU Staff Council seeking members, Kirk Jowers leaving the U and more.

Beginning Tuesday, April 21, a more secure way to connect to UConnect, the University of Utah’s wireless network, will be available to all students, faculty and staff as part of a beta test program. The “EAP-TLS” option helps to better protect users from having their passwords stolen or from accidentally connecting to potential fake UConnect networks. To start using the EAP-TLS sign-on option, take the following steps:

1.        Start with a wired connection, cellular connection or active UGuest connection

Students (who are not employed at the U) participating in the beta test will be automatically entered into an iPad Mini giveaway drawing.

Staff Council LogoThe University of Utah Staff Council is currently looking for positive, service-minded individuals to join. The University of Utah Staff Council is an organization established by University Policy 5-003 to make sure the interests of staff on campus are represented. The University of Utah Staff Council had several achievements and was involved in many events during the 2014-15 academic year.

  • Awarded 20 scholarships at $500 each (summer, fall, spring).
  • Members participated in the District and Staff Excellence Award selections.
  • Sponsored several events for staff including Shred Day where staff members were able to shred personal documents and dispose personal e-waste at no charge, U nights at Real Salt Lake, Utah Grizzlies and Salt Lake Bees discounted tickets.
  • Members actively represent staff interests on several committees across campus.
  • Members participated in the legislative process as advocates for staff of the University of Utah.
  • Continues to co-sponsor Employee Appreciation Day.

If you are interested in making a difference here at the U by participating on Staff Council, submit an application before 5 p.m., Friday, May 8 (Incomplete applications will not be considered).

Qualified applicants must meet the following criteria:

  • Applicants are benefits eligible (.75 FTE or greater).
  • Applicants have successfully completed the probationary period of employment prior to the beginning of the term of service (July 1 of each year).
  • Once cleared through HR, applicants will need to submit the “Supervisor’s Notification” form.
  • Once cleared through HR, applicants will need to submit the “Staff Council Membership Agreement” form.

The University of Utah Staff Council time commitment involves a two hour meeting on the first Wednesday of every month and participation on at least one of the subcommittees that involves one to two hours monthly.

Kirk Jowers
Kirk Jowers, a well-known professor of political science who has been dubbed the “most quoted man in Utah” during a decade-long tenure as director of the Hinckley Institute of Politics, is leaving his post to pursue a career in private industry.

Jowers has ushered the Hinckley Institute through a time of great change and elevated the program to a level of national prestige during his leadership role at the institute.

“It has been an absolute joy to serve as the director of the Hinckley Institute of Politics for the past 10 years,” said Jowers. “My most enduring memories will be of the incredible people involved with this great institute: First and foremost, the thousands of students who have served our internships, attended our classes and participated in our programs; second, the Hinckley family, which includes not only Jim and Lyn Hinckley, but also my Hinckley colleagues and many Hinckley supporters who are devoted to student empowerment, civic engagement, public service and intellectual fulfillment and finally, the hundreds of speakers who have so generously given of their time to share their expertise, passion and good will.”

“Needless to say, I have never been bored during these happy years at the U,” he added.
Jason Perry
Jason Perry, vice president for government relations at the university, will serve as interim director of the Hinckley Institute following Jowers’ departure June 30, while also maintaining his current role in government relations.



ASUU Child Care
ASUU Child Care Program is now enrolling for summer semester 2015.

Sign your children up for a fun summer on campus (ages 6 weeks to 7 years).

The ASUU Child Care Program’s mission is to provide access to high quality, affordable
child care for student families at the University of Utah.


The ASUU Child Care Program is operated within the Student Affairs Division of the University of Utah. Children of university students have priority placement and subsidized fee options at the center. At least one student parent must be attending the university and be registered for a minimum of six credit hours for priority student placement. Children of university students will continue to be eligible as long as one parent maintains a registered student status. A weighted criteria scale based on student demographics is used to determine final enrollment.

While university faculty, staff, post doctorates and visiting scholars are not eligible for subsidized care, we welcome their participation in our program, if student slots are unfilled.

The program provides:

  • Part-time hours and partial week scheduling
  • Subsidized fees
  • NAEYC accredited and state licensed
  • Developmental programming for children 6 weeks through 7 years of age
  • On-campus fields trips daily for children 5-7 years during summer semester only

Summer hours are Monday-Friday 7:30 a.m.-5:30 p.m.

Student Media
The Student Media Council is currently accepting applications for council membership. Faculty from across campus invited to apply.

Student Media at the University of Utah has two primary missions: First, to engage, provoke, inspire and connect campus by telling the compelling stories of the University of Utah community; and second, to provide a hands-on experiential learning environment in media where students can put into practice skills and ideas from the classroom.

The council oversees a student fee, which helps support the Student Media department, and runs the Chronicle, K-UTE, DigitalU, University Media Sales and Student Media Marketing. By becoming a member of the Student Media Council, faculty can play an active role in helping administer this student fee. Faculty voices are also vital in helping establish how Student Media grows and develops and best serves the campus community.
