Starting in January, the University of Utah will demolish the Medical Plaza at the eastern edge of campus.

Opened in the fall of 1971 to house medical school students and their families, the plaza consists of two 14-story towers and five townhomes—151 units in total.

Residents of the townhomes and towers moved out in the summer of 2023 to allow crews to remove asbestos in the buildings and prepare the structures for demolition.

Demolition of the towers will begin on January 13 and is expected to be completed in the spring.

More information will be released about the tower demolition and future use of the land in the coming weeks.
