Free for U: Publishing open access just got easier and affordable

Did you hear? Researchers at the University of Utah can now publish open access at no cost to them. The J. Willard Marriott Library has partnered with the Office of the Vice President for Research to facilitate open-access publishing through licensing agreements with scholarly publishers Wiley and Oxford University Press (OUP).

Both agreements allow corresponding authors to publish their research open access free of charge across Wiley’s more than 2,000 journals and OUP’s more than 500 journals. The three-year agreements run from January 2024 to December 2026. Additional benefits to authors include high-quality peer review, streamlined process, copyright retention and high visibility.

“We are delighted to be working with the VPR Office to provide this opportunity for faculty,” explains Sarah Shreeves, Alice Sheets Marriott Dean of Libraries. “With this partnership, we’re able to provide some of the most prestigious journals and help facilitate open-access publishing at the same time.”

Oxford University Press offers a vibrant open-access environment for authors. In 2022, they published more than 22,000 OA articles. Wiley publishes across all disciplines and provides an array of author services including help in preparing manuscripts and promoting articles.

“In the context of research integrity, it is crucial that we ensure open access to the research being conducted at the university,” comments Caren Frost, associate vice president for Integrity and Compliance.” Open access allows for study results to be disseminated more broadly to various communities and audiences. We are very excited about this initiative and appreciate our partnership with the Marriott Library in this endeavor.”

Wiley and Oxford University Press publish journals and books that cover a broad array of subjectseverything from Biomedical Engineering to Archeology, Business Management and everything in between.

“It is exciting to have the agreements in place after more than a year of evaluating alternatives,” said Joel Thornton, associate dean of Collections and Scholarly Communication. “Negotiating the comprehensive licenses required creativity to address the various needs of campus stakeholders. Because the University of Utah’s combined research output with Wiley and OUP accounts for approximately 12% of total research output, we are positioned to open many articles that previously would have remained behind paywalls.
