Due to Microsoft’s Secure Future Initiative, which includes new IT security requirements, the University of Utah is required to implement an enhanced Duo two-factor authentication (2FA) (login required) process to access Microsoft Azure-based services. The enhancements will help further secure university accounts and protect against unauthorized access.
Starting Tuesday, Aug. 5, 2025, main campus and University of Utah Health students, faculty, staff, affiliates, alumni and emeriti must complete an additional verification step during the Duo 2FA process when signing into Microsoft services. The U’s Information Security Office (ISO) will roll out the change on an ongoing basis.
The change affects the following Microsoft services:
- Microsoft 365 (Outlook/UMail, Teams, OneDrive, SharePoint, Word, Excel, PowerPoint, etc.)
- Power BI & Data Analytics
- Azure virtual machines and research computing
- Other tools that require Microsoft authentication
Any time users are asked to authenticate with Duo when accessing a Microsoft service, they will receive an additional prompt to verify their identity. Select “Approve with U of U Duo.” Users will then be redirected to the standard Duo 2FA experience to complete the authentication process.
