The University of Utah is in the process of retiring Centrex phone systems and services due to an order by the Federal Communications Commission to decommission copper lines and a decision by Lumen Technologies to end support for Centrex. UIT will replace Centrex systems with modern voice over internet protocol (VoIP)-capable alternatives, Microsoft Teams (for campus) and Avaya (for hospitals and clinics).
This project impacts all Centrex customers and Centrex-dependent services in the University of Utah and University of Utah Health buildings, including specialty services like elevator phones, alarm lines for subzero freezers, red emergency phones and faxes.
UIT will reach out to existing Centrex phone users to coordinate moving to Avaya or Teams; however, Centrex users can expedite the transition by emailing the UIT account executives team at uitaccountexecutives@utah.edu.
