WHITTINGHAM SIGNS CONTRACT EXTENSION THROUGH 2021[bs_row class=”row”][bs_col class=”col-sm-4″]

Kyle Whittingham, who is 104-50 in 12 years as Utah’s head football coach, recently signed a contract extension that will keep him at the school through 2021.
The 2008 National Coach of the Year, Whittingham has a 10-1 bowl record—tied for second among active coaches—and his 91-percent bowl win ratio is the best in NCAA history.

Whittingham came to Utah in 1994 as the defensive line coach and was promoted to defensive coordinator the following year. On December 8, 2004, he was named the school’s 20th head coach. His first victory came three weeks later when he co-coached (with Urban Meyer) the 2005 Fiesta Bowl win over Pittsburgh.

Overall, he has averaged nearly nine wins a season as Utah’s head coach. The Utes have wins over every team in the Pac-12 Conference since joining the league in 2011 and Whittingham’s impressive non-conference resume includes a winning record against current members of the other Power Five conferences: 4-0 vs. the Big Ten, 7-1 against the ACC, 1-0 vs. the SEC and 4-3 over the Big 12.[/bs_col][/bs_row]

TRIO PROGRAMS OFFICE ANNOUNCES CONTINUED FUNDING[bs_row class=”row”][bs_col class=”col-sm-4″][/bs_col][bs_col class=”col-sm-8″]The TRIO Programs Office at the University of Utah announces the receipt of a continuation award for the Upward Bound program from the U.S. Department of Education. This continuation award totals $424,009 annually and will support 92 first-generation and low-income high school students (9-12 grade) in Salt Lake and Granite School Districts who attend Highland, East, West and Kearns high schools. Students must meet federal low-income standards (are 150 percent below the poverty level) and be the first person in their family to attend college.

Services provided by the Upward Bound program include college preparation courses, after school tutoring, mentoring, intense summer instruction and college admission and financial aid application assistance.

The mission of the Upward Bound program is to decrease intergenerational poverty through post-secondary education. The Upward Bound program has been in existence at the University of Utah since 1972 and is one of the oldest, continuously funded programs in the United States.[/bs_col][/bs_row]

UTAH SOFTBALL FINISHES WITH HIGHEST RANKING EVER[bs_row class=”row”][bs_col class=”col-sm-4″][/bs_col][bs_col class=”col-sm-8″]Utah Softball was ranked No. 14 in the nation as the National Fastpitch Coaches Association released its final poll of the 2017 season. This is the highest final ranking in program history since the NCAA began keeping records in 1995.

Utah finished 37-16, its best record since 1997, and also had its best mark in Pac-12 play (13-9) since joining the conference in 2012.

The Utes reached the postseason for a 21st time and qualified for the NCAA Tournament in a third straight year, a program first. Utah also advanced to a second-straight NCAA Super Regional and hosted a NCAA Regional for the first time.

Utah finished No. 16 in the nation last year, the first time it ended a season ranked since 2000 when it was No. 20. The Utes also concluded the 1997 season ranked at No. 16.[/bs_col][/bs_row]

ATTENTION! HELP NEED WITH STUDY[bs_row class=”row”][bs_col class=”col-sm-4″][/bs_col][bs_col class=”col-sm-8″]A postdoctoral research associate in the College of Social Work is recruiting participants for a study on ways to improve attention among students and is seeking help from faculty teaching summer classes.

If you are willing to let the lead researcher come make a 5-minute presentation to your undergraduate or graduate class about the study, please contact Adam Hanley at utahattentionstudy@gmail.com.

This is a grant-funded, IRB-approved study that will involve about 90 participants. The participants will be paid up to $60 for their time, which will consist of a one-hour pre-testing session, a one-hour post-testing session and four 15-minute attention training sessions.[/bs_col][/bs_row]
