Humans of the U: Lizzie Rugh

“I came to the U because of the criminology program, and I also just liked the whole vibe of the school. It felt like a pretty good fit for me. I wanted to leave Provo. And here I’m close enough to still visit, but far enough away to live on my own.

Meeting all the new people here has been one of my favorite parts of my first semester. I’ve met a lot of people from all different walks of life. It’s also super fun to experience classes and try new things.

I have liked challenging myself with different types of classes. This semester, I’m taking social statistics. It’s my last math class and everyone was telling me not to take it, but I decided to just go with it. It’s my favorite class now and the professor is really great and I feel like I’m learning a lot.

My professor has given me a lot of resources to succeed. I got a concussion a few weeks ago and he was super understanding and has been sending me lecture slides to make sure I don’t miss anything. In class, he keeps things engaging and creates an environment where I am learning without feeling pressure.

I’ve never taken stats for class before. This one applies to my degree and having taken this course is going to help me with research later on, no matter what I decide to do with my career.

It’s really interesting to see how statistics can be applied to real-life situations, which is why I think I like it.”
