For the fifth year in a row, the University of Utah, the state’s leader in higher education, has broken enrollment records that it set the previous year. The U welcomed a record-breaking incoming class this fall. Totaling 6,001, this year’s incoming students represent a nearly 34% increase from the incoming class of 2020 and a nearly 8% increase over last year. Additionally, the U set a new record in the number of students from Utah in the first-year class.

”Once again, the University of Utah leads with enrollment growth across all sectors by giving students the best options to earn high-impact degrees. Annually, we set enrollment goals and break them the following year because of the quality of the education at this university and the power of our degrees to change lives,” said Steve Robinson, vice provost for enrollment management at the U.

Overall enrollment is also increasing at the U. With 36,881 members, this year’s student body has increased by 1,571 since last year. This enrollment is another record for the University of Utah—growing to its highest level in the U’s 174-year history. The U is also enjoying record enrollment of graduate students with a nearly 5% increase over last year.

“Our growth reflects the U’s value as a leading research university and our success in creating an environment where students can thrive academically and personally,” said Taylor Randall, president of the University of Utah. “As we welcome record-breaking numbers of students, we remain focused on cultivating the ‘college town magic’ that inspires them and sets them on a path to success.”

The U continues to serve students from the entire state of Utah with all 29 counties represented in this year’s incoming class. All 50 U.S. states are also represented as well as 108 different countries. The most popular major continues to be business.

“As our student body grows, we are more committed than ever to not only increasing access to the U but to increasing completion rates as well,” said Mitzi Montoya, U provost and senior vice president for academic affairs. “We are committed to supporting students through earning their degree and beyond.”

This fall also marks the first anniversary of the joint University of Utah and Salt Lake Community College campus in Herriman. Read more about this project here.
