The University of Utah community is saddened to hear of the passing of Carolyn Tanner Irish, a beloved community member who leaves a tremendous legacy at the University of Utah and across the state. Bishop Irish’s love for the U was manifest in her generosity of time, financial support and passion for endeavors on nearly every corner of this campus, but especially in the humanities.
Bishop Irish had an unparalleled desire for students to learn the invaluable lessons of philosophy, history, literature, language and communication. The university is privileged to have a building in her honor, the Carolyn Tanner Irish Humanities Building, which houses the Tanner Humanities Center. We are also proud to have bestowed Bishop Irish an honorary doctorate from the U in 1997 for her devotion to the U and exemplary service to the community.
We extend our sincerest condolences to Bishop Irish’s family and loved ones. Her legacy will live on through the lives of the countless students, faculty and alumni influenced by her example and generosity.
