Bloodborne Pathogen Exposure Control Plan

The University of Utah is committed to reducing the risks to individuals who may be exposed to bloodborne pathogens.  As such, Occupational and Environmental Health and Safety has developed a campus-wide Bloodborne Pathogen Exposure Control Plan to complement the current facility-specific plans. These plans meet the requirements of the Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) Bloodborne Pathogen Standard (codified in 29 CFR 1910.1030). They apply to all University of Utah research and academic activities performed on the academic campus, at the University Hospital and School of Medicine, the Huntsman Cancer Institute or at off‐campus facilities where there is the potential for exposure to bloodborne pathogens, while working with blood, tissues, cells (including primary and established cell lines) or cleaning up blood or other potentially infectious material (OPIM).

The Bloodborne Pathogen Standard requires that specific safety issues be addressed in the Exposure Control Plan including the following topics:

  • Methods of compliance (e.g., engineering controls, work practices, decontamination procedures and personal protective equipment used to minimize exposures)
  • Faculty, employee and student post-exposure procedures
  • Communication of hazards to faculty, employees and students
  • Procedures for hepatitis B vaccinations, post-exposure vaccinations and follow-up
  • Record-keeping practices
