Recycle Rice-Eccles COVID-style

Many of us don’t realize how much waste our day-to-day life can generate, so here are a few suggestions to make your virtual tailgate a little less wasteful.

UPDATE: This event has been postponed due to the game being cancelled. Additional events and plans will be adapted for any future home game during the 2020 season.

Recycle Rice Eccles has been one of the Associated Students of the University of Utah’s (ASUU) hallmark events for years now. It brings volunteers together with U fans to make tailgates a bit more sustainable by collecting recycling at specific tailgating events. Everyone gets to come together to root for the Utes while also sustainably managing our waste.

Given the pandemic, this year calls for serious adaptation of Recycle Rice-Eccles. So, we’re taking to social media!

Reduce your Waste Tailgate on Nov. 7

When the Utes play Arizona this Saturday, make your tailgate a little more sustainable by reducing your waste. For this game’s Recycle Rice-Eccles event, we are focusing on our waste. Many of us don’t realize how much waste our day-to-day life can generate, so here are a few suggestions to make your virtual tailgate a little less wasteful.

  • Skip out on those single-use plates and utensils that you often see at tailgates. Instead, use dishes that can be washed and reused in the future.
  • Try to purchase beverages from aluminum cans or glass instead of plastic bottles. Aluminum and glass are 100% recyclable and can be continuously repurposed! Make an effort to purchase cans or bottles and make sure they’re properly recycled.
  • Be mindful of your purchases. Food often can come in single portions and in single-use packages. It is worth searching for bulk or unpackaged items, so you reduce your packaging waste.
  • Use a reusable bag! Getting in the habit of using a reusable bag in the grocery store can help you become more mindful in reusing other materials too.

These are just some of the ways you can reduce your waste during your tailgate.  Being mindful of what you are purchasing is an important part of a sustainable lifestyle.

Let us know how you reduce your waste for the Ute’s opening football game by using #RecycleRiceEccles and tagging the ASUU Instagram page. The first 20 participants will win a free collapsible recycling bin that’s perfect for tailgates in the future.
