New insurance options for DACA recipients

In April of 2023, the Biden Administration announced its intention to allow DACA (Deferred Action Childhood Arrivals) recipients, better known as “Dreamers,” to purchase subsidized health insurance on the marketplace. Before that, the vast majority of immigrant communities with other legal statuses were allowed to purchase health insurance on healthcare.gov, except for Dreamers.

On May 3, 2024, the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services finalized the rule. As of Nov. 1, 2024, over 8,500 Dreamers in Utah will be able to purchase health insurance on healthcare.gov for the first time. This can be a significant money-saver for many and a lifesaving resource for many more.

If you are a Dreamer or know of anyone who is, free help with the application process is available through local nonprofit Take Care Utah. Visit takecareutah.org/bookings or call 801-433-2299 to set an appointment or simply ask questions.

University of Utah Health Plans is one of the participating health insurance options for Dreamers.
