National AI leader Elham Tabassi to deliver keynote at One-U RAI Inaugural Symposium

The University of Utah’s One-U Responsible Artificial Intelligence Initiative (RAI) invites the campus community to attend its Inaugural Symposium on Monday, Sept. 23, featuring keynote speaker Elham Tabassi—one of TIME magazine’s “100 Most Influential People in AI.”

Tabassi, an associate director for emerging technologies at the National Institute of Standards & Technology (NIST), also serves as an RAI External Advisory Committee member. She leads NIST’s AI Innovation Lab, which aims to cultivate trust in the design, development, and use of AI technologies.

The symposium will be held from 8:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. at the Cleone Peterson Eccles Alumni House. In addition to Tabassi’s presentation, entitled “Framing and Taming AI Risks,” the event includes a series of panels and 10-minute talks featuring faculty members from across campus and experts from government and industry. View the full program and register on Luma by Friday, Sept. 6.

RAI recently launched its faculty fellows and distinguished visitors programs to fund experts working to harness AI for the betterment of the environment, health care and wellness and teaching and learning—areas where the U has deep research strengths.
