Household hazardous waste (HHW) is defined by the Environmental Protection Agency as any products that contain corrosive, toxic, ignitable or reactive ingredients, such as:
- Cleaners (kitchen, bathroom, etc.)
- Oils (including edible oils)
Use and store products containing hazardous substances in accordance with instructions provided on the product label to prevent incidents. Never store hazardous products in food containers; keep them in their original containers and never remove labels. Corroding containers require special handling. On campus, contact Environmental Health and Safety for assistance if needed.
Never mix HHW with other products, incompatibility may lead to reactions such as fire or explosion.
Household hazardous wastes must be disposed of properly; household hazardous waste should never be disposed of in dumpsters or poured down a drain.
