Cuba learning abroad

Applications for the program are on the Learning Abroad website and must be submitted no later than Tuesday, Feb. 15.

Let’s go to Havana, Cuba this summer semester!  If you want an unforgettable experience that you can tell your family and friends about for years to come, then this course is for you.  The Cuban people and culture are a wonderful blend of Spanish and African roots.  It is the largest, most unspoiled, least commercialized, and most exciting island in the Caribbean.  It is one of the last bastions of communism in the world with a fascinating historical story. The colorful and lively neighborhoods, music, and warm spectacular beaches will make this learning journey truly one to remember.

To join us, please apply for our Summer 2022 course BENN 3780– Cuba: Complexity, Community, and Change, offered by the Bennion Center at the University of Utah. The approximate cost of the course and travel is $3,600*. Scholarships are available through Learning Abroad office.

The course is a Summer Semester, 3 credit hour upper-division course offered for both undergraduate and graduate students. Class will meet Tuesdays and Thursdays 3pm-5pm starting on Tuesday, 10 May 2022. The course fulfills the University’s International (IR) and Community Engaged Learning (CEL) general education requirements, and includes a wonderful week-long, in-country experience in Havana, Cuba,  27 May- 4 June 2022.  It is a rigorous, fun, and transformative experience.

The academic course covers the history, economy, and civil society of Cuba.  We will explore the interdisciplinary and collaborative nature of community-strengthening efforts in a global context, specifically in Cuba. The community engagement and in-country experience will immerse you in Cuban culture, language, food, life, rhythms, and service. We also seek to learn from local cooperative, government, non-governmental, and family-based organizations. We help out where our help is needed and invited!

We will have deeply engaged community learning experiences that highlight resource development, local activism, healthcare, agriculture, politics, sustainable consumption, environmental conservation, and cooperative demonstration projects.

Applications for the program are on the Learning Abroad website and must be submitted no later than Tuesday, February 15th.

We hope you’ll complete your application and join us for this very special learning experience.   If you’d like more information, please contact us with any specific questions or attend one of our information sessions at the Bennion Center at 11am on:  Wed 1 Dec and Wed 8 Dec.
