Change the world on your spring break

Want an impactful spring break? Need an outlet for your activist heart? We’ve got just the thing for you: Alternative Spring Break! Applications are open and all students are welcome to apply.

The Alternative Breaks program engages University of Utah students, faculty and staff in justice work and experiential learning over school breaks. Teams of students, along with staff and faculty, share work and stories with communities across the Western United States to support nonprofit organizations and community-identified projects. Leveraging the assets of the community along with those of the students, Alternative Breaks promotes lifelong activism by providing students with the experiences and skills necessary to build and organize communities through service, education, dialogue and reflection.

Here are the themes for Spring Break 2023:

  • Animal Advocacy and Rehabilitation
  • Disability Justice
  • Education and Economic Justice
  • Environmental Stewardship
  • Housing Justice
  • Immigration
  • Marine Conservation
  • Queering Justice
  • Sex and Healthy Relationships
  • Substance Use
  • Urban Environmentalism

There are timeframe options for all breaks:

  • Weeklong: Sunday, March 5 to Saturday, March 11
  • Weekend: Friday, March 17 and Saturday, March 19

Applications are open until Jan. 15 at 11:59 p.m. and participants will be notified about their status by Jan. 27. Participants are eligible to receive academic credit and break discounts are available.
