This year, the ACCESS Scholarship Program is running its spring research symposium completely virtually using a custom-built Canvas page coupled with an integrated chat board app and Zoom to mirror the interaction in a live symposium. This platform is truly novel in that guests will get multiple points of engagement with the student including a video introduction of their research, an online discussion board, and a live Q&A session via Zoom. Student presentations and discussion boards will be available starting April 29th and the live Zoom sessions will be held on May 1st from 9:00 a.m. – 2:00 p.m.
The symposium can be accessed here: https://science.utah.edu/students/access/access-symposium/
We have also created a Teacher Toolkit which contains a high school lesson and worksheets for attending the symposium. This will allow high school students to gain insight into what research is like at the college level and discover paths in STEM that they might not have thought about while giving teachers a class activity that’s about as hands-on as we can get during this turbulent time
