The following is a statement from University of Utah President Ruth Watkins

I am closely following the serious and disturbing allegations involving a university student. My heart goes out to the victim, whose care and well-being is foremost in our thoughts, and to others affected by this. I am very grateful for the timely and thorough work of the Salt Lake City Police Department and university departments involved in investigating this case.

There is no place for sexual violence in our community and when that involves members of our campus we will continue to move quickly and decisively to address issues and incidents as they are reported and brought to our attention.

Whenever cases like this arise, students, staff and faculty can experience emotions ranging from fear and stress to frustration and anger. Further, survivors of violence might feel triggered by these reports. Please take care of each other and support your friends and colleagues who might be particularly impacted by ongoing reports of sexual violence. I encourage anyone affected by today’s news to engage the counseling and support resources available to them through the university. Those resources are listed below.

Statement from Director of Athletics Mark Harlan

“I have been in close contact with campus leadership and head football coach Kyle Whittingham regarding the alleged incident and the arrest of student-athlete Terrell Perriman.  The details alleged in the police report are disturbing and difficult to read and my heart breaks for the survivor in this case and for all survivors of sexual assault.

We have more than five hundred student-athletes who proudly and deservedly represent the University of Utah with character, integrity and kindness and we will not allow the alleged actions of anyone to define who we are and what we are about.  We will continue to educate our student-athletes on appropriate conduct, decision-making and consent. We will also continue to cooperate with law enforcement in this matter and provide any assistance that we can.”

Statement from Coach Kyle Whittingham

“We were made aware of the very serious allegations involving a member of our football program and he was immediately suspended from all team activities. We have since been informed that Terrell Perriman has been arrested by the Salt Lake City Police Department. Obviously, this does not reflect the values and standards of our program and we will continue to monitor the situation as it moves through the legal process. We are cooperating with the authorities and university personnel and will continue to assist as requested. Due to the ongoing legal proceedings, we are unable to comment further at this time.”
