The Basic Needs Collective (BNC) is hosting its annual Winter Clothing Drive to help students, especially students who are unfamiliar with Utah’s cold winters, stay warm. Students can pick up clothing items for free—no questions asked at the BNC’s thrift shop.
It was first launched in the fall of 2022 by Jennifer Rodela, the BNC’s basic needs programming lead, becoming a favorite among students. Thanks to students’ interest, the BNC has made improvements such as adding racks and categories and building a stronger network, creating a more welcoming space for all university students.
The BNC’s thrift shop has many items to offer while also considering the time of year. As of now, the thrift shop offers coats, sweaters, hats, gloves, snow boots and more! Sizes range from X-Small to 4X-Large, but the most popular sizes are small, medium and large.
Where: The thrift can be found outside the Basic Needs Collective, next to the Feed U Pantry (in the Union basement). Donations can also be dropped off at the BNC’s space.
When: The big push for donations is Nov. 18-Dec. 16. While the BNC accepts donations throughout the year, this designated period ensures they can organize and restock thoroughly before students leave for the holidays.
How to donate
- Drop-off items are directly brought to the collective’s space during office hours (as listed on their website).
- Contact the Collective at basicneedscollective@sa.utah.edu or DM the BNC on Instagram (@uofu_basicneeds) to coordinate.
Even though donors are encouraged to contact the BNC before dropping items off, they will still gladly receive them without prior notice.
The thrift thrives thanks to the generosity of the community since donations play a crucial role in keeping the BNC’s thrift vibrant and well-stocked. By donating, you’re helping fellow students stay warm and express themselves through a new, unique style—even far from home!
