Finals week is coming to the U, and it’s going to take more than caffeine and highlighters to make it to May. It’s 9:47 p.m.—third-years are cramming for econ or perhaps questioning all their life choices mid-paper—when hunger strikes with undeniable urgency. For the best study hack yet, skip the stale pretzels out of the vending machine and embrace Salt Lake’s late-night dining scene ready to beat the brain fog in the form of carbs, cheese, and comfort in all its caffeine-fueled, sleep-deprived glory.
The Pie Pizzeria
Located just west of campus beneath the University Pharmacy (and all over the valley) The Pie Pizzeria has been bringing College Town Magic to campus for 44 years with their double-proofed dough, hand-shredded whole milk mozzarella and fresh-sliced meats and vegetables. Head into the basement and through the old brick arches to dunk cheese pull-a-parts in the best housemade ranch in the city. Build your own pie or try one of their specialty options. The loaded slices can also be made as zappis (calzones) and paired with salads and hearty pastas. They also offer vegan and gluten-free options, so there’s something to keep everyone fueled up for a long study session. Students get a 10% discount with a UCard, even on deliveries. The Pie is open until 11 p.m. Monday through Saturday and 10 pm on Sundays making it a go-to for group study sessions.
Alberto’s Mexican Food
Craving late-night Mexican? Alberto’s is the spot for hungry diners on a budget. From tasty tacos to crunchy tostadas and burritos you have to eat with both hands, it’s hard to go wrong when they’re filled with carne asada steak, shredded pork or chicken or simply rice and beans—plus that great guac. Located downtown at 511 S. 300 W., Alberto’s is open until 11 pm Monday through Saturday. Studied so late it’s breakfast time? Grab a breakfast burrito or huevos rancheros starting at 7 am.
Arempas
Arempas specializes in vibrant Venezuelan fare, namely arepas—corn cakes filled with a variety of savory choices like the Peluda stuffed with full-flavored shredded beef and garlic sauce or a breakfast option (Perico) featuring scrambled eggs and sautéed vegetables. Try one of ten flavors of fried empanadas packed with delicious proteins that come with a choice of dipping sauce for an easy meal to enjoy while studying. Bite into cheesy (or chocolatey) tequeños or their famous Patacon burgers. They also offer vegan and vegetarian options. Open until midnight on Thursdays and until 3 am Friday and Saturday, it’s a great spot for a savory handheld to push through the final stretch.
Little World Chinese Restaurant
Sometimes noodles are the answer to whatever question being posed. Little World Chinese Restaurant delivers (literally) generous portions of pan-fried noodles and flat noodles as well as authentic Chinese food choices with a no-frills, old-school vibe. You can also get everything from roasted pork chow mein to cream cheese wontons and orange chicken. Little World has long been Salt Lake’s answer to quick, cheap and satisfying Chinese food. Open until midnight every day.
Pie Hole
Located on State Street just a short walk from TRAX, Pie Hole offers everything from their classic Pie Hole Supreme to fusion favorites like potato bacon, Drunk Candy, and Thai chicken. The vibe is exactly what’s needed after a midnight study session: dim lights and punk rock playlists. Pie Hole throws dough until 3 am every day with six by-the-slice options (cheese, pepperoni, roasted red pepper and basil, potato bacon, slice of the day, and daily vegan slice) at ready to grab and go. Full signature pies or build-your-own options come out piping hot and are easy to share with a study group.
This semester, fuel those study sessions and final exams with fresh and hot bites from local dining establishments open late to satisfy any craving.
