Making room(s)

This fall, construction will begin on Housing & Residential Education’s newest 992-bed residence hall and fully functioning livable community and set to open fall of 2020.

Construction/Parking Impacts

Beginning Nov. 15, 2018, a full lot closure will take into effect in Lot 22 near the Marriott Honors Community, Huntsman Center, Annex and HPER Buildings.

Housing & Residential Education is growing. This fall construction will begin on HRE’s newest residence hall set to open Fall of 2020. This new 992 bed residence hall will be a gathering place and a fully functioning livable community.

Located just west of the Donna Garff Marriott Honors Residential Scholars Community (MHC), construction will begin in early Oct. 2018. This space is designed to encourage students to deepen their engagement with the U through two major categories of special living options: Living Learning Communities (LLCs) and Themed Communities (TCs). LLCs and TCs are designed to bring students with similar interests, majors, goals, and experiences together.

Living Learning Communities have a common course(s) with other members of the community.  Living with classmates in LLC’s allows residents to study together to complete their general education requirements. This in turn helps students make important progress on their honors degree or choice of major.

Theme Communities do not have shared required course(s). Rather, members engage with each other over common interests to embrace a sense of common community.

The communities being planned include:

  • U Health-Health & Wellness wing, with a core focus on Interprofessional Education as well as increasing access to health professions for underrepresented students
  • Technology Initiatives wing, focusing on increasing the number of students in the science, technology, engineering and math [STEM] disciplines, particularly historically marginalized students
  • Community Engagement, focusing on connections with the Bennion Service Center, advocacy/activism, and service
  • First Year Honors communities

Studies show that students that live on campuses are 12 percent more likely to finish their degrees on time. This strategically located residence hall will help U students succeed during their time on campus by being better equipped to serve the entire campus. A full dining hall will be on the first floor to serve residents of the building, the Honors residence hall and anyone on campus needing a nutritious meal. It will also have computer labs, private and shared study areas and conference rooms for communities to utilize. And the Student Life Center is just a few feet away.
