Save the date. It’s been on the calendar for 175 years.
For 175 years, the University of Utah has educated bright minds, served communities, made groundbreaking discoveries and led in innovation.
Originally named the University of Deseret, the school took root soon after the 1847 arrival of settlers from The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints when church president and territorial leader Brigham Young assembled a board of regents. On Feb. 28, 1850, the university was officially founded. The first classes were held on Nov. 11, 1850, and in 1892, the institution was renamed the University of Utah.
From day one, the U dared to dream bigger and climb higher, and we are thrilled to commemorate nearly two centuries of achievements alongside the campus community, students, friends and alums who’ve helped make it all possible.
The 175th anniversary kicked off on Founders Day, Feb. 27, and we’re wrapping up this historic year with a celebration for the ages. All are invited to join us on Thursday, Oct. 16. Families are welcome, and all events and refreshments are free. Dance through the decades with a live band; enjoy games, caricature artists and live performances; and indulge in desserts galore and mouthwatering bites from the university kitchen—our treat! Make history as part of our digital time capsule and experience so much more!
Festivities start at 5 p.m. at the A. Ray Olpin Student Union culminating with a drone and light show at 7:30 p.m.
You only turn 175 years old once, and we can’t wait to celebrate this milestone with you.
