The Board of Trustees of the University of Utah has approved a plan to design and build a new facility to house the Department of Public Safety. This comes after a feasibility study looked at which would be more cost-effective: renovating the current facility or constructing a new one. The study concluded that building a new facility would best meet the long-term needs of the department as it and the university continue to grow.
The proposed site for the new facility is on 500 South, just east of Guardsman Way. That location currently serves as a parking lot. The plans for the facility include a 25,000-square-foot public safety building, a storage unit of just over 2,000 square feet, and secure parking. The estimated cost for the construction of the facility is just over $13 million dollars.
The proposal for the new building will now be presented to the Board of Regents and the Building Board. Final approval is expected on April 1.
